--Dr. Gloria Bautista

Research has discovered what expectant mothers throughout time have intuitively known, that inside of them thrives a conscious vibrant being who responds to their loving voice, touch and emotions. This program sheds light on the significance of the maternal and fetal mind/body/spirit connection, and redefines the new science of prenatal bonding. This program is designed to enhance every stage of your pregnancy, bonding you and your baby heart-to-heart from the start. You'll explore the many levels that touch the deepest part of a mother's heartfelt wishes and dreams by immersing yourself in your loving heart-to-heart communication with your baby. Through this unique process, you'll achieve a richer, deeper connection, merging into the purest realities of your heart.

MOTHERHOOD - IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE....

We are sitting at lunch when she casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family". "We're taking a survey," she says, half joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say carefully, keeping my tone neutral. "I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on the weekend, no more spontaneous vacations..."

But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my friend, Trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in child birth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be forever vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never read a newspaper again without asking "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a souffle or her best crystal without a moment's hesitation.

I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think about her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of her discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.

I want my friend to know that everyday decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonalds will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.

Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years - not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs. I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My friend's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the ways she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is always careful to powder the baby or never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.

I wish my friend could sense the bond she'll feel with women throughout history who have tried desperately to stop war and prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues, but become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to my children's future.

I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time.

I want her to taste the joy that is so real, it actually hurts. My friend's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.

"You'll never regret it," I say finally. Then I reach across the table, squeeze my friend's hand, and offer a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings. The blessed gift of God and that of being a Mother.

The 1998 Common Ground
Humanitarian Achievement Award
By Dr. Gloria Bautista

The end of the year provides reflective moments to take stock of how we have grown, what we have learned, and how we have enriched the lives of others. One of our favorite features over the years has become our annual Humanitarian Achievement Award, where we honor one person's journey and recognize his or her significant contribution toward the advancement of humanity. This year's recipient inspires us with her insight, wisdom, and her call for women to awaken and honor their babies' consciousness during their sacred prenatal journey.

We are proud to announce Common Ground Holistic Resource Guide's 1998 Humanitarian Achievement Award to Sandrine Manchester NLP, CHT. Sandrine is an extraordinary woman who has created a timeless program that empowers, heals and teaches women while bringing deeper levels of wellness, love and joy into pregnancy. Regarded as one of the most trusted leading-edge pre-and perinatal psychology researchers today, this sophisticated, soft spoken 36-year-old single mother is as modest is she is knowledgeable. Sandrine's research sheds light on the significance of the maternal and fetal mind/body/spirit connection, and redefines the new science of prenatal bonding.

In an eight year period, 387 women have participated in the New Way Childbirth Heart-to- Heart Bonding Method audio and video research study, which evolved from women who approached Sandrine for help in reducing the pain of labor and childbirth.

A therapist, Sandrine routinely assisted people to uncover and release painful life issues. She noted the increasing number of clients who spontaneously identified the origins of their core problems to memories of events that transpired in utero. This awareness prompted Sandrine to develop a program where an expectant mother takes time each day to attain deep levels of relaxation in order to create a more loving and nurturing environment for her baby, with the added benefits of boosting a mother's self esteem, reducing the length and discomfort of labor while opening up a joyous two way path for a profound heart-to-heart bond and communication with her unborn baby.

The women who used this program experienced phenomenal results and the referrals from friends and family poured in. It was apparent that Sandrine had created a program that mothers' hearts were yearning for: a practical audio and video program that resolves and addresses issues that no other program successfully or comprehensively addressed. "Empowering women to awaken to the reality of the consciousness of their unborn babies and honor the sacred journey of their child's emergence into this world is simply a joy and privilege to facilitate," states Sandrine.

This program has successfully blended a potent combination of medically proven physiological and psychological concepts that are the cornerstone for the new science of prenatal bonding. Combined with innovative labor enhancing tools and techniques, this program's methods are changing the way women prepare for and experience labor. Studies show that women on this program typically give birth between four to six hours with reduced pain.

The breakthrough methods in this beautiful award-winning audio and video program are gaining national and international attention and are being touted by mothers, doctors and childbirth educators as "the new Lamaze for the new millennium."

When I asked Sandrine about this very distinguished prediction, she smiled and said modestly, "I'm flattered to know that people are getting the concept, because ultimately it means that generations to come will have love as their first and predominant memory."

"Sandrine's New Way Childbirth program has added a new and significant dimension to the word 'love'", states psychiatrist Dr. Louis Stolis. "More than any other prenatal researcher, she has singlehandedly developed the first practical medical application that quantifiably enriches and empowers a woman and her baby's prenatal journey. Her studies are inspiring a new wave of medical research into the psychology and physiology of maternal love and its profound effect on the developing fetus."

Endorsements from the psychological, medical and brain research communities have encouraged Sandrine. "When we address the value of prenatally bonding with your baby and honoring your baby as a conscious individual, some people feel that this is purely a religious matter which falls out of the realm of traditional medical sciences," states Sandrine. Her vision is to co-create more awareness of the profound global impact that prenatal bonding provides, regardless of social, scientific or religious orientation.

According to cellular biologist, researcher and author, Bruce Lipton, PhD, a former associate professor and researcher at Stanford and the University of Wisconsin, "Proponents of genetic determinancy claim that our physiology and behavior expressions are determined once the sperm and egg come together at the moment of conception. According to this mechanical view, maternal 'nurturing' of the fetus is simply limited to providing appropriate metabolic support. This traditionalist dogma, which attributes little significance toward a pre-and perinatal 'environment impact' upon human development, has been radically challenged by recent advances in cell research."

"In regard to influential material content, the role of the mother's biochemistry in fetal development is well known," continues Lipton. "However, the breakthrough New Way Childbirth prenatal program goes a step beyond to incorporate the missing link as it relates to enhancing the direct physiological effect of maternal consciousness on the conscious fetus."

Lipton states "Most everyone is in some way familiar with the impact that the mother's material (chemical) content has upon human development. However, very few are aware that the mother also passes on information content to the fetus during pregnancy. The information relayed by the mother to the fetus concerns the status of the environment. This status is conveyed in the mother's perceived attitudes about life. The mother's emotions, such as fear, anger, love, hope among others, can biochemically alter the genetic expression of the offspring."1

"Our perceptions of the environment, and their attendant emotions, elicit physiological responses in the body by releasing 'signal' molecules into the blood," states Lipton. "Blood-borne emotion- related signals activate specific receptor proteins on the surface of cells in the tissues and organs. Activated receptors serve as molecular switches that adjust the metabolic system and behavior of the organism, so as to accommodate environmental challenges. Physiologic responses to environmental signals include regulations of the nervous system, endocrine organs, and the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and excreatory functions."

"The mother's blood-borne emotional chemicals cross the placenta and affect the same target cells in the fetus as those in the parent," continues Lipton. "Though there is still debate as to if the developing child is 'unaware' of the details (i.e. the stories) evoking the mother's emotional response, they are aware of the emotion's physiological consequences and sensations."

"While developing in the safety and confinement of the uterus," states Sandrine, "the child is provided a preview of the environment as its defined by the mother's perceived behavior. Maternal behaviors are generally cyclic, and when repeated, they serve to habituate the developing behavioral chemistry in the fetus. Consequently, maternal perceptions and responses to environmental stress are imparted to the fetus and serve in programming its behavioral expression.

Technically, these 'learned' filters would enable the child to adapt more quickly and successfully to the home environment. The parent's experiences help 'preprogram' the behavior of the child, so that it may more effectively deal with environmental exigencies."

Sandrine continues, "Behavioral 'memories' are in part related to the appearance of specialized cell and tissue protein receptors which serve as 'filters' in remembering past signals. Behavioral 'filters' acquired during pre-and perinatal 'programming' are Nature's way of preparing the neonate to function in the parent's environment.

"Imagine a world in which every child was honored and loved from the very beginning. Now, imagine the human spirit empowered to achieve its ultimate potential through unconditional love. That is a primary vision of the New Way Childbirth program," states Sandrine. "Through this program, we help bring more joy into the pregnancy experience by assisting the mother to cultivate love and compassion for herself and her baby. We help the mother to evaluate her options to release unwanted patterns which might cause her to over react to her life's perceived stresses. Through specialized techniques, she learns to flow with life and to create a more peaceful environment for the sake of her conscious growing child. Each trimester's audio tape deals with pregnancy-related issues that support and enrich the expectant mother's pregnancy while guiding her on magical life-altering heart-to-heart prenatal bonding journeys with her baby."

When I asked Sandrine about the success of her Pre-term Labor Management program she smiled and said "It's primarily about consciousness and how consciousness affects the body. Research has shown that women who have used this program, in conjunction with traditional medical intervention have kept their babies in utero an unprecedented average of seven life saving days. I believe our Pre-term Labor Management program is successful because it approaches the crisis from the mind/body/spirit perspective. We are breaking the barriers of the perceived maternal function as solely providing metabolites and a safe haven for development. During stressful situations, the survival advantage offered by the New Way Childbirth program's new approach in communicating on all levels with the baby is quite apparent." Several hospitals agree and have approached Sandrine to incorporate her program.

New Research regarding maternal and environmental influences on gene expression urgently underscores the significance of the New Way Childbirth program and methods. Through this program the new science and concept of striving to create a 'conscious pregnancy' can now become any mother's reality.

Sandrine stresses the concept that parents become consciously aware that from conception through the child's pre-and-postnatal development, that their thoughts, attitudes and behaviors will profoundly influence their child's development and health.

Common Ground applauds Sandrine's effort to enhance a preemies in utero survivability and provide effective tools for women to shorten their labors while enriching their prenatal bond with their babies. Most importantly, we salute her vision to create a world where love is a child's first memory. There is no doubt that the New Way Childbirth program sets the standard by which all other prenatal programs will be measured.

1 Dr. Lipton notes that individual events of parental anger and fear do not necessarily distort the 'physiology' of the developing child. It is specifically 'chronic', or continuously held emotions that prove to be detrimental during pregnancy.
